Roman Kim

Kim was born in Kazakhstan, as the son of a family with Tatar, Belarusian and Korean origins. He began his violin studies as a five-year-old. Three years later, he was already studying with the famous violin teacher Galina Turchaninova at the Moscow Central Music School. In 2004, he received a scholarship from the "Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation". Kim was admitted to the class of the renowned violinist and teacher Prof. Viktor Tretjakov at the Cologne University of Music, in 2008. Kim won numerous international competitions and was honoured with awards such as the Ivry Gitlis Prize of the “Festival Le Printemps du Violon” in 2016.
Roman Kim's repertory is focused on Romanticism and works by virtuosos who – as composing instrumentalists – became the first modern stars in history of music. Kim regularly performs in Italy, Germany, France, Hungary, Russia, USA, China, South Korea, Romania, Switzerland, Turkey, Armenia, Israel and Taiwan. He already played in concert halls like the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, the Kölner Philharmonie, the Romanian Athenaeum, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Munich Herkulessaal, the Beijing Concert Hall, the Bari Teatro Petruzzelli, the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest and the Taipei National Concert Hall. He performed together with such orchestras as the NDR Sinfonieorchester (under the baton of Aziz Shokhakimov), the Staatskapelle Halle (with Josep Caballé Domenech), the Aachen Symphony Orchestra (under Dirk Kaftan), the Orchestra del Teatro Petruzzelli (under Alpesh Chauhan), the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra (under Daejin Kim) and the Düsseldorf Symphonic (under Alexandre Bloch). Kim currently lives in Cologne and studies Composition at the Cologne University of Music. Kim became an international celebrity at the age of 19 with a video project featuring his spectacular interpretation of Bach's "Air".
